Margaret R. Furman
SUNBURY -

Margaret R. Furman, 63, of 2196 Boyles Run Road, went home to Heaven on Friday, July 10, 2009, at her residence.

Margaret Louise Reid was born Dec. 21, 1945, in Williamsport, and grew up in Allenwood, the youngest daughter of the late Rev. W. Sinclair W. Reid and Marion (Burley) Reid. She was married at Bucknell's Rooke Chapel on June 10, 1967, to Joel Roger Furman who survives. They were married for 42 years.

Margaret was a 1963 graduate of Warrior Run High School and a 1967 graduate of Lock Haven University. While at Lock Haven she earned a degree in physical education and was a member of the gymnastics team and the Delta Zeta sorority; she had a special place in her heart for their pink and green colors.

She taught physical education for one year at Wilmer E. Shue School in Newark, Del., and later substitute taught in several Susquehanna Valley school districts. She worked for many years as a sales consultant for Furman Foods, traveling extensively with her husband.

Margaret bred and raised Golden Retrievers, taught Sunday school, and was active in many organizations over the years such as the P.T.A. at Joseph Priestley Elementary School, the garden club, and Christian Women's Club.

She attended hundreds of her children's sporting events from field hockey, tennis, and track and field, to wrestling, baseball, and football games.

She loved nature and the outdoors, birdwatching, tending to her large flower gardens, Penn State football games, doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles and making applesauce or apple pie. Her family firmly believes she was the best maker of apple pies in the northeastern United States.

Much of her time and energy was spent enjoying her family and friends, and investing in making the world a better place. Her vivacious personality, determination in all things, and the attitude with which she lived her life was an inspiration to anyone fortunate enough to have crossed her path.

Along with her husband Joel, she is survived by four children, their spouses, and four grandchildren. Daughter, Elisabeth Robina Paxton and her husband Eric of Powhatan, Va., and their children, William Eric and Sylvia Louise Margaret; daughter, Heather Jane Palladino and her husband Christopher of Penndel, and their children, Isabella Josephine Elizabeth and Nicholas Alexander Thomas; son, Major Reid Epler Furman, Army-Special Forces, and his wife Captain Julia Margaret Burns Furman, Army, of Fayetteville, N.C.; and daughter, Lt. Anne Margaret Furman, PA Air National Guard, of Carlisle; and by one brother and two sisters, William S.W. Reid III and his wife Carol of Greene, N.Y., Heather Isabella Williams and her husband Robert of Sarasota, Fla., and Robina Elisabeth Cronrath and her husband Gary of Watsontown.

A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Bible Fellowship Church, Sunbury, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by a funeral service at 11, with the Rev. Charles Cole officiating.

Interment will be in Mountain Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Boyles Run Road, Sunbury.

Funeral arrangements by the Joseph Epler Funeral Home, Northrthumberland.
