James Duff was born in 1817 in Florida. In 1839, he married Adel who was a native of Washington D.C. James came west to California in 1849 with John C. Fremont and was one of the first settlers of Mariposa. He is credited with bringing the first stamp mill to Mariposa. In 1856 Adel joined her husband bringing their adopted daughter, Mary Parks. Mary was an orphan who came into the care of the Duff's when only one month old. James was a successful miner and was thought to have found an ample supply of gold. He loaned money to many of the people in town at an agreeable interest rate. He had a house near the Catholic Church and owned a number of lots in Mariposa. Thomas Duff, James's brother is also buried with the family. He passed away in April of 1866. (1874?)
Mary Duff married Fred Brightman in 1882. The Brightman family relocated to Humboldt County. In 1900 Mary returned to Mariposa for her first visit and upon her arrival she became violently ill. Doctor Kearney was called but could not relieve her. She passed away Sunday around noon. Adel Duff passed away in 1905 at the age of 85. James followed her in 1909.
