REBECCA STRAIT
Relatives and friends were to learn of the passing of Mrs. Rebecca Strait Monday morning at the University Hospital in Iowa City, where she had gone for treatments nine weeks ago after a sudden illness, which proved to be a tumor on the brain. Two weeks ago an operation was performed with the hope that her condition might be benefited, but she grew steadily worse, until the end came Monday morning at 3:25. The body was brought to Corning, Adams County, Iowa to the Boyd Roland funeral home. Services were held at the Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, with the pastor, Rev. Bowen in charge.
Mrs. Bertha Gourley had charge of the music. Burial was made in the Quincy Cemetery.
Rebecca King, daughter of Noah and Mary King was born May 6, 1870 in Madison County, Iowa and died Monday, June 6th, 1938, in the University Hospital, aged 68 years and one month.
Rebecca King was married to Ambey C. Strait, April 24, 1887, in Adams County, Iowa and all their married life was spent in this county. 35 years of it on one farm. Mr. Strait died May 11, 1931, but all the children who blessed this union, except one who died in infancy, are still living. These are, Mrs. Carrie Tilton, El Centro, California, Frank Strait of Corning, Iowa, Mrs. Lela Gourley of Nodaway, Iowa, Clarence of Berthold, North Dakota, and Lester Strait of Corning, Iowa. She is also survived by five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, and by four brothers, Gus King of Shenandoah, Grant of South Dakota, Charles of Des Moines, Iowa, Howard of Alvin, Texas; three sister, Belle Strait of Alvin, Texas, Mrs. B. F. Myers of Dexter, Iowa, and Mrs. Frank Barker of Kawande, Manitoba, Canada.
Mrs. Strait united with the Highland Adventist Church in early youth, but of late years she has worked with the Baptist Church of Corning, Iowa. She was a loyal worker in the Rebekah Lodge and in the Woman's Relief Corps.
Besides her own family of six children, she had taken into her home and cared for and reared, as her own, six other homeless children, who love her as a mother. She was so ready to respond to a call for help, and her services in the sick room have endeared her to a whole neighborhood, and a large circle of friends. Her cheery, happy disposition has added cheer to life in many circles, besides the home fireside.
