From the San Juan Prospector, 12 December 1908

Saturday morning, December 5, 1908, the death of Matthew Babey occurred at his residence in Del Norte, after a protracted sickness of six years. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Saturday afternoon and interment took place in the Del Norte Cemetery.

The deceased was born at Brandywine, Delaware, May 13, 1847, and died December 5, 1908, making him 61 years, 6 months and 22 days old.

April 11, 1862, at the age of 16 years, he enlisted in the Civil War and at the Battle of Independence, August 11, 1862, was severely wounded and was in the hospital for 9 months. August 1, 1863, he was mustered out of the army and went to New York and from that city to Wyandotte, Kansas in 1868. In 1876 he reached Denver and remained there until 1878, when he located at Ft. Garland, Colorado. He was married to Martha Houle at Alamosa March 7, 1881, and moved to Del Norte the same year where he has since remained.

He never fully recovered from the injuries and diseases contracted in the army, and these caused him to take to his bed October 20, 1902, since which time he has never left his house.

During the early days of this section he was a violinist of no mean ability and led many of the orchestras that furnished music for the important social events of those times. Many of the "old timers" will testify that when "Matt" played, the dancers feet never grew weary.

He leaves a wife and son in Del Norte to mourn his death.

NOTE: Interesting that Mathiew has a marker denoting service in the Spanish American War. Not so. The Battle of Independence in which he engaged as a Union soldier was fought in Missouri in 1862, and once recovered and discharged, he never served in the military again.
