Elsie had a strange nickname "pickerbox" from the famous television show hosted by Bob Dyer. She never missed it and everyone called her pickerbox. This name passed down to her great Grandchildren.
She was the wife of Tom Rixon senior and she lived at 52 Queen street,Uralla.Picker box was a very stylish woman who was very independant after the death of her husband,in 1974.
She raised four children:Denny,Beryl,Tom and Marlene. She also adopted a boy called dennis.Nan also lost at least one child at birth and she was too sick to go to its funeral.
If you wanted the best scones in the world that would melt on your mouth or the most succulent lamb chops then Nans kitchen was the place to go.Her little house was always warm and her kitchen was always open.It was an oasis in a terrible small minded town.
I stayed with Nan many times and we would watch 'Dynasty' and 'Bennie hill'.She loved her 'days of our lives' and 'young and the restless'.She would call people that amused her "Silly Rats".
Nan would always dress in her finest to go shopping and her health was excellent until she passed away. She ate very well and outlived her 13 siblings.
Every Christmas Nan would make a plum pudding called 'plum duff'.I would empty the tealeaves from the teapot in her garden and she would joke that a kangaroo wouldnt be able to jump over the pile. We called the jug that she boiled for tea the "duck" and still say put the duck on to make tea. Did I mention that she cut her own wood and had a wood fire to cook.Once a big cat came and made its home in her wood shed. She called it 'dickex' and she spoiled by feeding it chops and mince. It was a very large cat!
Pickerbox was loved and very missed. They dont 'make em like that anymore'.
THANK YOU TO THE URALLA SHIRE COUNCIL WHO DROVE OVER AND SMASHED MY NANS GRAVE. you got away with it in short term but there is an irish curse on anyone who did this and took away the evidence.
