William moved from Jackson County, Ohio to Jasper County, Illinois with his parents. He served briefly in the Union Army in the Civil War, but was mustered out because of disability (army camp illness, resulting in then untreatable strep throat infection, with resulting rheumatic heart disease). He caught "Oregon Fever" but could not go as soon as would have liked, since he had a wife and children to care for. His mother Mary Trexler Foster was living in Oregon with William's brother Thomas. When she wanted to come home in 1883, William seized the oportunity to go to Oregon to scout out the land, then fetch his mother home to Illinois. He plan was to move his family to Oregon. After several weeks of travel he arrived at a train depot not far from his brother's house in Oregon. He started walking but never arrived. He got lost in a snow storm. It is unknown if he died from a heart attack from over-exertion of his already damaged heart, or if he froze to death. His body was located 3 days later. He is buried at the cemetery at Oretown in Tillamook County, Oregon. The white marble marker was purchased in Illinois by his widow and shipped by train to Oregon, where one of his brothers put it in place.
