Photographer. He worked as an Associated Press photographer for over six decades, capturing some of nation's most historic images. He photographed every American president beginning with Herbert Hoover in the 1930s, through Bill Clinton, and every New York City mayor from Fiorella LaGuardia to Rudy Giuliani. He joined the Associated Press in 1936 as a photo messenger. Drafted into the United States Army in 1940, he stormed Utah Beach with the Fourth Infantry Division on June 6, 1944, capturing images of the Allied D-Day invasion of occupied France. He was the only photographer to capture the spontanous bear hug between Cuban leader Fidel Castro and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev on the floor of the United Nations in 1960. His wide range of subjects spanned the fields of entertainment, national and international politics, the military and sports. His numerous photo credits included Marilyn Monroe, Sir Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth II, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, James Cagney, Frank Sinatra, General Douglas MacArthur, Sophia Loren, Anwar al-Sadat, Yasser Arafat, the Beatles, Nelson Mandela, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali. In 2001 he captured the images of the terrorist attacks on New York City's World Trade Center, earning him the cover of "New York" magazine. He retired from the Associated Press shortly following the attacks in 2001 at the advanced age of 84. He died from complications of a stroke.
