A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in Lancaster April 24, 1861, mustered into federal service that day in Harrisburg as a private with Co. E, 10th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 31, 1861. He then enlisted and mustered into federal service August 19, 1861, as a private with Co. A, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, and his name spelled "Sauers" on the rolls. He honorably discharged at term's end October 3, 1864.
He married Amanda C. Gusley, but their only child was Ida M. (b. @1898 - adopted). He died in Martic Township, Lancaster County, from "apoplexy."
