RITES HELD FRIDAY FOR
EUGENE A. BARLEY

Funeral services were held from the home in Linden Friday morning, December 20, 1946, at 11:00 oÂ'clock, for Eugene A.Barley, 76,who died Wednesday night at 9:05 at the Demopolis Hospital following a brief illness. The Reverend O.A. Forehand, Baptist pastor, conducted the services, which were concluded at the graveside in the new Linden Cemetery. A wealth of beautiful floral tributes and a large number of friends from all parts of the county who assembled at the home and followed the body to his last resting place attested the high esteem in which the departed was held.

Pallbearers were R.D. Hartzell, R. P. Allen, E.O. Eddins, Sam Drinkard, W.A. Mosley, and Thomas H. Boggs.

Dodd Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Barley was born in Linden, September16, 1870, the son of Thomas W. and Mary Barley, and lived here all his life. He married Miss Mildred Peaton, daughter of A G.and Maggie Peaton of Coatopa, Sumter County, April 25, 1894, who survives him.

Also surviving are one son, Val T.Barley, of Linden, and two daughters Mrs. Louise B. Trippe of Linden and Mrs.Allie B. Taylor of Three Rivers, Texas; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was a keen lover of fishing and hunting, and was considered in many quarters as an authority on the finer points of these pastimes, especially in the art of turkey hunting which he could give many valuable pointers to the younger generation of nimrods.

For more than fifty years Mr. Barley had been in the service of the people of Marengo County, beginning early in life a clerk in the Probate Office under Judge Woolf, and serving in the same capacity under Judge Prowell and Judge Hasty. He served as Clerk of the Board of Revenue from the time of its organization in 1922 until his death, being on duty at the time he was stricken with his last illness. His long experience in handling matters of county business in connection with his ability and integrity in handling the many details connected with his duties made him particularly invaluable to the Board of Revenue, and it was with much regret that it was learned that he had tendered his resignation sometime before his death.
