Michael McDonald died at age 94 (some sources say 97) and is buried in the family cemetery near the site of the pioneer log cabin that he and his brother Nicholas built. They were the original pioneers of Ballston.

Michael married Sarah Du Bois, a descendant of French nobility who lost their titles when they converted to Reformed Christianity. According to The American Descendants of Chretien Du Bois, Michael and Sarah had the following children: Margarita, Catarina, Jesse, James, John, Betsey, Michael, Alexander, Susan, Rebecca, Sarah, and Anna Maria aka Polly.

Born in Ireland, Michael and Nicholas sailed to America, arriving first in Philadelphia, and served terms of indenture. Supposedly the young men had been lured aboard and were forced to pay for their passage. Although deceptions of this sort did occur, it is worth noting that growing numbers of Irishmen were emigrating to America during this period.

Michael and Nicholas later served in colonial forces during the French and Indian War (Seven Years War).

The two brothers settled in Mohawk country in what is now Ballston, Saratoga County, New York. They "squatted" on the land for some time. Sir William Johnson, an Irish baronet who worked for the Crown in the Colony of New York, helped Michael and Nicholas acquire a deed for 200 acres of land.

DAR recognizes the Revolutionary War service of Michael McDonald (currently spelled "Michel" in DAR records). He served as a private in the Albany County 12th Regiment of the New York Militia, commanded by Col. Van Schoonhoven.

Some recent records cite the C. Durkee cemetery report of 1878.
