W.W. Wagar was a son of Alexander and Nancy Cooper Schaff Wagar. He moved from New York to Atkinson, Henry County, Illinois in 1862. He was a Baptist who married Lucina Rebecca Gilbert on March 9, 1852 at Yates County, New York. Following the death of his wife in 1874, he and his children, along with his mother-in-law, Speda Minerva Tyler Gilbert, moved to Richardson County Nebraska by train. They crossed the Missouri River in a ferry boat. When living in Illinois, Wagar was a choir director for his Baptist Church as well as a farmer. After the move to Nebraska, his mother-in-law resided in his home and helped rear his seven living children.
