John Copeland was born about 1840 in Kentucky to William and Sally D (or Dolly S) Copeland. His siblings were James, Jacob, Milly L, Richard, and Reuben.

On Feb 2, 1860 he married Sarah A Massey in Dallas, Texas. In 1860 they were living in Dallas but by 1870 they were living in Lincoln Co, New Mexico.

John and Sarah adopted two children, "Joe Woods" (Sigwald?) and Isabella Sanchez.

For a brief time, John Copeland was Sheriff of Lincoln Co, NM, just before George Peppin.

John owned a ranch and also property in the town of Lincoln.

In November 1880, John and Sarah were divorced.

Per the Lillian Bidal book "Pisacah: A Place of Plenty", John Copeland died at Richardson, Lincoln Co NM on June 26, 1903 and was buried "in the family burying plot at the McFarland Ranch near Arroyo Seco."
