Mrs Burt Van Horn

The Lockport Union-Sun of Friday, Oct ll contains this notice of the death of Mrs Burt Van Horn, to which reference has been made in a previous issue of The Democrat.

Thursday was recorded the sad death of Alicine Schuyler Van Horn, wife of the late ex-Congressman Burt Van Horn. Mrs Van Horn's serious illness was known to her many friends, but the fatal termination came as a great shock to them.

Mrs Van Horn was the daughter of Thomas and Eleanor Schuyler, and was born in Montgomery county, NY, on Feb 26, 1848. She was a descendant of Gen Philip Schuyler, the famous Revolutionary soldier. Coming from a long line of illustrious ancestry, she was a woman who in every respect did credit to her family. She was an ideal American gentlewoman. Intelligent, kind, sympathetic, she was a loveable woman, respected and admired by a very wide circle of friends. For 33 years she lived in Lockport, endearing herself to all those around her by her sweet disposition and noble character. She was a suitable companion and able helpmate for her distinguished husband Congressman Burt Van Horn, who after his eminent services to the country as a member of the house of representatives during the trying Civil war period, took an active and prominent part in the public affairs of the city of Lockport and the county of Niagara. She was, however, preeminently a domestic woman, and made for him and their children a most happy home. She cooperated with him in earnest church work and to both the Baptist denomination and the community at large were indebted for self-sacrifice and devotion that made for the greater good of the city.

Mrs Van Horn leaves one daughter, Grace, at home, and two sons, Burt Van Horn, manager of the International Traction company of Buffalo, and Willis Van Horn, a prominent citizen of Niagara Falls.

The funeral was held Saturday at 2 pm from the family residence, 247 East avenue, the burial occurring after the services at Glenwood cemetery. The services were conducted by the Rev W P Hellinga of Jamestown, for many years pastor of the First Baptist church of this city, assisted by the present pastor, the Rev H P Klyver
