The son of William & Mary (Beck) Ream, he married Phoebe Mitzel and fathered Eli (b. 05/05/44), James R. Peter (b. 12/15/45 - 209th Pa), Adam (b. 06/08/48), William (b. @1851), Elizabeth (b. 10/05/52 - married a Heininger), Mary (b. @1856), Emanuel (b. @1858), and Henry (b. 01/17/60). In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Hopewell Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and is in the 1863-65 draft registration still residing there. He stood 5' 8" tall and had sandy hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of forty in York August 27, 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 14 as a private with Co. C, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. Suffering from a pre-existing ulcerated leg, he discharged by surgeon's certificate to date January 7, 1863. His brothers Eli and Peter and nephew "Little" Eli served in the same company, and sons James and Adam served with other regiments.

He died at his home on Edgar Street at the reported age of 70-11-12. Typical of the times, his actual age is uncertain as the 1850 census indicates a birth year of 1820. The year 1887 is also reported as his year of death, but his tombstone and obituaries disagree.
