Obituary
DR. JOHN T. HERR DIES; WAS PIONEER COUNTRY DOCTOR
Dr. John Trout Herr, one of Lancaster's pioneer country doctors, died at 9:45 a.m. yesterday at his home in Landisville, following an illness of several years. He was sixty-seven.

Born on a farm near Lancaster, he was a son of the late John Eckert and Anna Trout Herr and resided for the past 60 years in the same dwelling in Landisville where, since Jan. 13, 1912, he had an office and practiced medicine.
MARYLAND GRADUATE
He attended the public school of Landisville and later entered Franklin and Marshall Academy where he graduated in 1905. He then enrolled in Franklin and Marshall College where he spent two years before entering the University of Maryland School of Medicine, graduating in 1910.
For the following year he served his internship at St. Joseph's Hospital and took post graduate work at Childrens' Hospital. Philadelphia, before entering private practice.
For his first three years, from 1912 to 1915, Dr. Herr used a horse and buggy to answer calls in the rural areas around Landisville, while a sleigh was put to use during the winter months.
Finally, after answering calls at any time of the day or night either by buggy or sleigh, Dr. Herr in 1915 secured an auto in which to make his "rounds."
Because of his extreme interest in fulfilling his duties as a physician, Dr. Herr took little or no interest in political or social organizations and had no hobbies or special recreation to follow during whatever off duty hours he had.
However, for about ten years and in a direct line with his work, he served as a medical inspector for several schools in a number of nearby townships soon after this service was inaugurated in the school system of Lancaster County.
ON HOSPITAL STAFF
Dr. Herr was a member of the staff of St. Joseph's Hospital since serving his internship there and also served as medical director at the Oreville Mennonite Home for over 40 years.
His professional affiliations included the American Medical Association and the Lancaster County Medical Society of which he served as president in 1936.
Besides his wife, the former Katharine Kauffman, he is survived by a daughter, Anna Mary, elementary music supervisor at the Lansdowne Public School; and a brother, Harry T, Landisville.
