Howard was the husband of L. Augusta "Gussie" Schultz & the son of Ebenezer Bland & Harriet Lane. Gussie too is buried in this cemetery.

A Texas Historical Marker was erected in Taylor, Texas honoring Howard Bland, Sr. Dedication of the Texas Marker was on Saturday, October 24, 1987 at 2:30 p.m. for his Developmental Efforts and service in the early years of the Community. It is located on the highway FM 112 a short distance from his old original ranch house built in 1878, where most of his children were born. He was a Taylor Pioneer Rancher/Businessman. He was honored for his Developmental Efforts and Service in the early years of the Community.

Howard Bland was one of the developers who began a rural community and land development project six miles north of Fowlerton, Texas on state Highway 97 in northwestern McMullen County. It was named for one of his daughters, Zella Bland. The Zella Townsite Company developed the site on the San Antonio, Uvalde and Gulf Railroad in 1913. The company drilled an artesian well and built a number of buildins, including a railroad depot, a one-room schoolhouse, and the Zella Hotel. It also printed and distributed thousands of promotinal brochues which portrayed the area as a farmer's paradise. Zella was granted a post office in 1914, and a few town lots and some of the surrounding farmland were sold. A drought and the start of WWI discouraged the settlers by 1917. The town lost its post office in 1916, and the school closed soon after it opened. The railroad depot continued to operate for many years, and Zella served as a cattle shipping point
