BIOGRAPHY BY REBECCA REUBEN DYER
Martin Slaughter was born in Franklin County, Virginia, to John Slaughter and Mary Handy. He was called to be a primitive Baptist Minister, and proved to be prominent and popular. His Slaughter line was of GERMAN descent. He lived on the South branch of Goblintown Creek and served his community as a juror. On the 11th of August 1825, Martin Slaughter married Miss
Mary Conner, daughter of John Conner and Lucy Fox Robertson. Family lore is that Martin Slaughter gave each of his daughters at the time of their marriage $800 in gold and a fine horse. His wealth was in gold coins and it was thought his coins were buried on his property when he died. His only son, John Slaughter, died near Chesterfield, Virginia, shortly after he joined the Confederate Army.
