John, a farmer, was a son of Joseph and Mary E. (Johnson) Tolan and he never married. He had 4 brothers, Henry, Joseph, Robert, and Clinton; and 3 sisters, Carrie (Lynch), Sarah (Shonyo), and Marion (Anderson). John was a Private in the 68th Company, 153 Depot Brigade, in World War I. John, after the war, returned to his home area and entered into the growing popular wrestling matches across Northern NY in which John won many bouts fighting under the name of "The Polar Bear."
