Mrs. Emma Sofia Anderson was born in Ramsberg, Westmanland, Sweden, on July 27, 1853. She passed away after a month of serious illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mabel Stephens, May 12, 1938 at the age of 84 years and 9 months.
On March 6, 1876 she was united in marriage to Andrew Anderson and they made their home at Guldssmedshyttan, Westmanland, Sweden. Mr. Anderson passed on to his eternal rest in 1918. They both joined the Methodist Episcopal church while yet in Sweden. Upon their arrival in America in 1881, they settled in Chesterton, where they have been ever since. After but a couple of weeks of residence here they joined the Lincoln Avenue Methodist Episcopal church by presenting their letters of transfer from the church in Sweden. The faith which had come from youth been hers was her hope and strength until her last day, and her faith in Christ brightened her very last moments on earth.
She leaves to mourn five children: Three sons, Elmer of Chicago, Arthur of Gary, and Glen of Porter: two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Stephens of Chesterton and Mrs. Ethel Carlson of Chicago; twelve grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, two nieces, Mrs. Emma Dabbert of Porter and Mrs. Dina Sievert of Porter, besides other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Sunday, May 15, at 1:30 p.m. in the home of Theodore Stephens and at 2 p.m. in the Lincoln Avenue Methodist Episcopal church, Rev. T. O. Carlstrom, pastor and Rev. Andrew Reese a former pastor, were in charge and spoke. H. F. Carlson sang one solo in the home and one n the church. Miss Emile Beam and Miss Ruth Hokanson sang a duet in the church and Mrs. Pearson of Chicago sang a solo at the grave. Burial was in the Chesterton cemetery.
Among the out of town friends attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Pearson, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Swensen, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Greenleaf, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Norling, Fred Anderson, Alfred Anderson, Ester, Mable and Anna Anderson, Mrs. Freida Ongman, all of Chicago: Mrs. Lucy Peters, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Green, Mrs. George Ecklund of Gary; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wendt, Charles Wendt, Mrs. Hilda Sadenwater of Michigan City; and Mrs. Tillie Johnson of Valparaiso.
