born in Glarus, Glarona, Switzerland, son of Heinrich Walcher and Elsbeth Kundert

Marcus immigrated to the U.S. at N.Y. aboard the ship "Costello" from Havre on 25 Oct 1852 -- traveled with: Anna Trümpi (32), Jacob Trümpi (9), Peter-Paul Streif (44), Henry Trümpi (44), Henry Trümpi (16), Marie Trümpi (19), Susannna Trümpi (4) -- listed as a farmer from Switzerland.

On some naturalization papers his name is given as Mack WALDEN. Other naturalization papers provided by his grandaughter, Mrs. Florence Bohning Koenig, give his name as John WALDER (latter date below). His marriage record has his name as Marcius WALYER. The 1870 census entry is for John WALLER. In fact the German Swiss pronunciation of "WALCHER" phonetically sounds like "WALYER" in English.

Marcus worked at a lumberyard in Cleveland before taking up farming.
