DIED

At Savannah, Georgia, on Monday the 17th inst., Mr. William Alvord, of Albany, New York in the 36th year of his age.

He had sailed for that city from New York, bound to a southern climate, with the hope of relief from a pulmonary complaint.

He had been there but ten days, when the disease took its course, and his soul calmly took its flight to the other world.

It will be gratifying to his numerous friends to know that though distant from his home, he did not fail in his last days to receive great kindness from the hands of those by whom he was surrounded.

All who knew him are aware he possessed a heart replete with the most generous and high minded sentiments.

But he was as estimable as a citizen as he was beloved as a friend. Endowed with great mental energy, he was remarkable for his perseverance, for his inflexible integrity, of his suavity, for his kindness to all with whom he come in contact, for his uniform and consistent career.

Irreparable as our loss; and long, long will the fond memory of his virtue remain embalmed in the hearts of many in this community.

In the Whitney Genealogy that was published, it stated he was buried in Georgia. He was probably interred in Savannah but a headstone was found in the Albany Rural Cemetery.

After seeing his children and wife actually buried in San Francisco, consideration of a different cemetery was considered.

Albany Rural Cemetery Burial Cards did have information about Lot 22, Section 74. His age was given as 36 Years, 9 Months & 20 Days. This record was obtained from the lot and not from burial information itself.

The headstone has Mary E [mother] and Selleck on it. We do know that they are actually buried in California.
