Daniel Stainbrook was a real pioneer. He was born of German parents of Pennsylvania stock at Zanesville, Ohio, December 27, 1824. At twelve he was an orphan and came west to make his home with his sister, Mrs. Lizzie Nevitt in Illinois. In 1849 he drove a team of oxen through to California without losing an animal, a record at that time. He came back in 1851 to Bureau county, Illinois, farmed a while and married Mary Frances Drawyer of Bradford, who was born in Peckskill, New York. In 1866 he sold out and came here (Linn County, KS), buying out old Peter Blystone who lived on the north side of Middle Creek ford, still known as "Blystone Crossing." The children of Daniel Stainbrook were Laura Ann (married first Thornton Bunch, then Squire Dillon Moore), John Frederick who married Mollie Long, Franz Sigel who married Addie Doig, Ruhama Elizabeth who married B. W. Mendenhall, and Julia Amanda who married George D. Marmon. - from the book Linn County, Kansas - A History, c 1928, pgs 176-177, by Wm. A. Mitchell
