Of Caleb, the eldest, nothing is known. Phineas, the second son (1755-1813), married Jane Dean, daughter of John Dean, of Orange. They had three sons and probably four daughters. Moses Smith: Tradition and records show that one James Smith, an orphan, who resided with an aunt in Scotland, becoming offended by his said aunt, absconded, and was a passenger in the vessel in which Philip Cartaret made his second voyage to New Jersey. Upon his arrival, James Smith was placed as an apprentice to a Mr. Crane, of Newark, with whom he remained, marrying one of Crane's daughters. James Smith became the owner of a large tract of land, which he devised in 1720-23 to his sons. A portion of the land is still in possession of Mr. James Smith, a lineal descendant.

David Smith, another descendant, was the father of Moses Smith, above alluded to. Moses Smith resided on a tract of land which was originally surveyed to Robert Campbell. (See John Campbell.1)

Her father was Joseph Baldwin, son of Jonathan Baldwin, son of Joseph Baldwin of Milford. He is not the Joseph Baldwin that married Elizabeth Bruen. The Joseph Baldwin that married Elizabeth Bruen was the son of John Baldwin Sr of Newark, son of John Baldwin of Milford. A different family entirely. Confusion over the identity of Rebecca's mother arises from the tradition of her father also marrying "a Bruen".
