In 1697, he emigrated from Wales to Philadelphia, sailing with William Penn on his second voyage to the Quaker City.

He settle in Merion Meeting, Merion, PA and took position as schoolmaster. When he moved to Philadelphia, he was a city official, that witnessed wills.

In 1718, he was elected a member to the Common Council of Philadelphia and also served as his county representative in the Provincial Assembly.

He married fellow Quaker, Martha Jones, 29 December 1699.
