Henry Jansen died the morning of Oct. 16th at 1:15. While Mr. Jansen had been ailing for the past two years, he has been up and about during all this time, and it was only yesterday afternoon he was out on the streets. When going home about 4:30 he had a stroke of paralysis when within 50 feet of his door. He was carried home but died without regaining consciousness. His death, coming as it did, was a shock to the entire community.
The deceased was born in West Point, Sept. 28, 1861, died Oct. 16, 1916, his age being 55 years and 18 days. His late wife departed November 14, 1909.
He started a blacksmith shop here about 31 years ago, after working a number of years for J. M. Auwaerter of Ft. Madison, and from a humble beginning built up a good business, having for several years been selling buggies and harness in connection with his blacksmith shop. Owing to ill health, his son Rudolph has had charge of the business for the past two years. He was always ready to lend a hand to the needy, he was progressive and enterprising, and will be greatly missed by the entire community.
He leaves besides his aged father, Barney Jansen, who is 83 years of age, to mourn their loss, three sons, Simon of Burlington, William of Davenport and Rudolph at home; five daughters, Cecilia, Adaline, Rosaline at home; Josephine and Ernestine of Burlington; four brothers, Joseph of this place, Harman of Davenport, Stephen of Iowa City, Theodore of Farmington; and five sisters, Mrs. Chris Bruegenhempke of Neola, Mrs. Jacob Bush of Keokuk, Mrs. William Odiorn (or Odjorn) of Farmington, Mrs. Roy Durbin of Davenport, Mrs. Ray Snyder of this place.
The funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Church, Wednesday morning at 10:00 o'clock, Rev. Grothe officiating.
