James was a veteran of the Civil War. He served as an Engineer on the ship "USS Reliance", from October 1861 until January 9, 1865 when he resigned.

The 'Reliance' went into service on May 29, 1861 and continued until her capture on August 12, 1863. She was destroyed to prevent recapture on August 28 at Port Royal Virginia.

James McCaulley's family mausoleum is the only mausoleum in the numbered side of Cedar Hill Cemetery. Located at the front of the cemetery by the entrances, it can't be missed.
