BERNARD WALZ
Bernard (Bud) Walz, 74, died July 13 in the Dakota Hospital. Funeral services were held July 16 in St. Agnes Catholic Church with Msgr. Richard Mahowald officiating. A scripture wake service was held Friday evening in the St. Agnes Church. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery under the direction of the Iverson Funeral Home.
Bernard Francis Walz was born Feb. 14, 1909 to Leo and Gertrude Chaussee Walz in Vermillion. He married Sarah Larson Feb. 24, 1931 in Vermillion. He was a lifelong resident of the Vermillion community and was a fleet director for the University of South Dakota until he retired in 1973. He was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church, a charter member of the Vermillion Eagles and a member of the Elks Club in Yankton.
Casket bearers were Michael Watson, Gary Girard, Gary Anglin, Grant Berglund, Kevin Berglund and Randy Bahmer. Honorary bearers were Jim Grant, Art Melby, Carl Walz, Henry Walz, Folmer Christensen and John Blaschke.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mary Jayne Merrigan, Livermore, Calif., Mrs. Andrew (Mary Jeanne) Girard, Vermillion and Mrs. Pete (Patricia Ann) Berglund, Sioux City, Ia.; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; three brothers, William, Vermillion, Delmer, Grove City, Okla., and Warren, Kingdom City, Mo.; and two sisters, Viola Huetson, Plano, Texas and Mrs. Darrell (Mary) Grangaard, Cudahy, Calif. One son, Donald, preceded him in death in 1938.
