The son of Daniel & Angeline (Wire) Hollerbush, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living in Conewago Township, York County, Pennsylvania, but much of that portion of the 1860 census is unreadable. He stood 6' 0" tall and had sandy hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Goldsboro, York County, August 13, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 23 as a private with Co. B, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.

He married Elizabeth Brunner Paup and fathered Mary (b. @1868), Grant (b. 04/11/73), Hays (b. 10/17/77), and Hallick (b. 10/18/77 - apparent twin to Hays). Cause of death is listed as "lobar pneumonia" with "chronic bronchial catarrh" a contributing factor.
