On June 30, 1863 a Settlers license was granted to Andrew to improve and cultivate a part of the land known as Swamp Land of Alcona Township in Alcona County. On July 20, 1868 for the sum of $1.00, Andrew was granted 69.27 acres. During this period of settlement, Andrew and Margaret saw the arrival of 2 more children: Mary Ann in November 1863 and William in February 1867. Llewella would join the family in February 1869, she being the second recorded birth in the now developing Alcona County. Andrew was a highly respected member of the Alcona community. He served several terms as Justice of the Peace.
Andrew died from complications of a stroke on Christmas Day of 1881. Margaret passed away on 26 February 1897 and is buried alongside Andrew in Springport's Section 8.
