His death notice from the 6 November 1851 edition of the Lexington Gazette:

Departed this life on the 25th inst., at his residence near Lexington, in the County of Rockbridge, JOHN BOWYER, ESQ'R., in the 85th year of his age, who had for many years laboured under Epilepsy of the most agrivated (sic) form; and which in its ravaging influence and violence, fastens itself indiscriminately upon the most vital organ of the sufferer.
►Obituary next week. [mortuary notice, p. 3]

Note: Unfortunately, the next week's paper ran *without* an obituary for John Bowyer, so it would seem that whatever they were planning to say about him has been lost to history.

Biography: He represented Rockbridge County in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1810-1813 & 1814-1825.

A 26 October 1851 letter from James Hubard Bowyer to John Colston Bowyer concerning their father's death:

Thorn Hill, Sunday Morning, Oct. 26, 1851
Dear John:
It is my painful duty to inform you of the death of our beloved father on yesterday morning. About half past seven o’clock he breathed his last without a struggle. Our dearest mother thought he was in a sweet sleep, but became alarmed from his quietness and came to me to come and look at him ; and, as soon as I placed my eyes upon him, I knew his spirit had fled.
Our poor mother is in the deepest sorrow, and there is a gloom cast over dear old home, which will take the sums of many years to dissipate — perhaps never. Write to her and cheer her lonely heart. To have seen her stealing at morning’s early dawn, by her self, to take her last look, and to have heard the prayer that came from the depth of her soul, would have melted a heart of stone.
Remember me to Nancy and the children and believe me as ever ;
Your affectionate brother,
J. H. B.
P. S. — We sent yesterday for Henry. We are looking for him every minute. We all wish you could be here today to see him consigned to the grave.
J.

A write-up on John Bowyer contributed by fellow Find-a-Grave member, John: Hon. John Bowyer was several times presidential elector, was a member of the Virginia Legislature 30 years, an eloquent orator and an old time aristocrat, he received Thorn Hill from his uncle Gen. John Bowyer.
