Alexander was the third of eight children born to John More and Betty Taylor More. As a toddler, Alexander was known as Sandy by his family. Soon after his birth, the family relocated to Catskill, New York due to hostilities by Indians and Tories. The family returned to Delaware County, New York in 1786. Alexander married to Nancy Harley in 1795 at Moresville, New York, the community founded by his family, and lived at that place all of his days. He, like most people of that time, was a farmer. He established an orchard and raised large crops of wheat. Alexander was instrumental in building a turnpike from Moresville to Catskill. He built saw-mills at Roxbury and at Kaaterskill Clove near Palenville, New York. He is remembered for his honesty in business, kindness and love by his family, and generous to his community. He was a strong believer in education. After his wife died in 1850, Alexander lived with his son William. Alexander and Nancy were the parents of fourteen children, twelve of whom grew to adulthood; Betsy More, Mary More, John Harley More, Sally More who died in infancy, Sally More who died at the age of ten years, Thomas Harley More, Joseph Harley More, Edward Harley More, Robert Harley More, Daniel Dayton Tompkins More, Abigail “Abby” More, James Monroe More, Gertrude C. More, and William Wallace More.
