"Eldon 'J' Barney had his last roundup on March 31, 2008, at the age of 81, when he passed away from injuries due to a disagreement with a cow. He was born March 30, 1927 in Safford, Ariz., the fourth child of Arthur John and Lucy Jennings Barney.

He graduated from Safford High School and entered the Navy in 1945. When he was discharged from the Navy, he attended Gila Academy (EAC) until 1947, when he married his sweetheart Shirley Mae Edmonson. They moved to Pomerene Jan. 1, 1948, where they farmed, had a dairy, and ranched and have been there ever since. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in June of 2007.

Eldon was very active in church and community. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in many callings including being a member of the bishopric for 17 years. He and Shirley also served a mission for the L.D.S. church in the Philippines. He was on the Benson High School Board for 25 years, and in the Scouting program for as long as we can remember. He was president of the Pomerene Water Users Board from the time he moved to Pomerene until it was recently dissolved.

Eldon was known for his generosity, as most everyone has eaten at least one of his watermelons.

Those who truly love and will miss him are his wife Shirley, children Janie (Michael) Charchenko, Sandy (Layne) Peterson, Becky (Hal) Rowley, Patty (Max) Burrell, Polly (Dalen) Edington, Jay (Barbara) Barney, Suzanne (Alan) Judd, and Flint (Kristina) Barney, plus 54 grandchildren, 83 great-grandchildren and many, many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 7, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the L.D.S. Stake Center on Pomerene Rd., Pomerene, Ariz. Viewing was from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. that morning. Burial followed at the Pomerene Cemetery."
