The son of Van & Catharine (Black) Barto, in 1860 he was a farm laborer living in Ferguson Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 22, 1861, as a private with Co. H, 7th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 29, 1861. He next enlisted at McAlevys Fort, Huntingdon County, August 17, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 31 as a private with Co. C, 49th Pennsylvania Infantry, later transferring to Co. B, date unknownHe was wounded at the battle of Gaines Mills June 27, 1862, and hospitalized until discharged by surgeon's certificate February 24, 1863. He last enlisted in Harrisburg August 12, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 17 as a private with Co. D, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865.

He married Amanda Jane Ellenberger in 1865 and fathered Della (b. @1870), Josey A. (b. @1872), John Calvin (b. 12/02/74), Lydia Frances (b. 03/28/77 - married Winfield Scott Bresle), Leroy Whitney (b. 03/02/84), Mary (b. 09/??/86), and Earnest Foster (b. 04/20/89).
