She was born Oct. 7, 1913, in the Key West community east of Lebo, the daughter of Clarence C. and Winnie Williams Taylor. She attended schools in the Strawn and Lebo communities. She lived in Reading from 1934 until 1982 when she moved to Emporia. She was employed by the Reading School lunch program from 1951 to 1959.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Reading and provided homegrown flowers for church events for many years. She was a member of Orphah Chapter No. 140 of Order of Eastern Star and the Social Club, both in Reading.
She married William H. VerBrugge II on April 26, 1935. He died March 25, 1947. She married Frank Schlageter on April 15, 1956. He died Sept. 21, 1969. A daughter, Ella Dean VerBrugge, died Dec. 7, 1935.
