Griettje married Arie De Reus Jr. on April 21, 1859 in Pella, Iowa. She was the daughter of Arie and Adriaantje [Kamp] Bruggeman born in Westmaas, Holland and came to America in 1856.

Griettje and Arie were parents of 15 children, 10 of whom survived to adulthood: Mattie, Arie III, Peter, Adriantje*, Henry, William*, Adrianus*, Nellie, John, Mae, William, Ned, Gradus*, Gradus*, and Marinus.

*These children died in infancy.
