Death of a 49er
Died In Turlock, Ca;., July 5, 1891, Captain Gideon Worth, a native of Nantucket, aged 76? years and ? months.

Captain Gideon Worth, formerly of French Creek, died July 5, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs H.B. Waters, of Turlock. Stanislaus county.

Gideon Worth began the life of a seaman as cabin boy and rose to the Captaincy, which position he held for twenty-five years, commanding the noblest vessels that sailed out of Boston Harbor. His voyages were long and perilous. He sailed around the world three times, and doubled Cape Horn nine times. He stopped on the coast of San Diego in 38. No fairy tales were so interesting to the young people as the adventures and experiences rlated by him, of his sea-faring life.

He began to fail physically, five years ago. Whe he first learned that he could not be trusted with a span of horses, he arose with all the dignity of the Captain, and said: "Do you suppose that I, who have driven a ship over the wildest waves of stormy billows-can't drive a team?"

When disease had finally convinced him that even the commander must yield, the breaking of the strong, active life was pitiful. During the past two and a half years he was quite helpless, but patient and quite, asking for nothjing, finding no fault, suffering no pain. There was no apparent change in his condition till within two or three hours of the time the "Silver cord was loosened."
He was among the old pioneers of El Dorado county, having landed in San Francisco in 49. He tried mining on Mormon Island, then for a time he pelved for the precious metal on Feather River, and then took the ranch on French Creek in default of borrowed money. There he built up a confortable and independent home and reared his family consisting of Thos. G. Worth, of Missouri Flat, C. A. Worth, of Fresno, and Mrs. Sarah Waters, of Turlock. Many friendless and penniless ones have shared his and Mrs. Worth's generous hospitality. Poor "Lu" and his numerous relatives often sat in the yard and enjoyed the bountiful supply of cold victuals given them.

Could Captain Worth's life be written, it would be a theme for poet or historian. He belonged to a sturdy but kind-hearted class--a race of heroes which is being fast gathered to the silent majority, while others are reaping the harvest they planted "better than they knew."
