Darius D. Chappell spent his boyhood in Warren, Penn. and at the age of 19, with little money, headed west.
After working in Walworth Co. a season. then returned home for his family and brought them to his new place where he worked for his father and others as a carpenter and in the winter in the Eai Claire Woods.
He was born Dec. 8, 1833, a son of Shubil and MaryAnn (Palmeter) Chappell.
On June 21,1857 he married Carolina Fowler, daughter of Benjamin and Martha (Kocher) Fowler of Penn. born 1838.
When they moved to section 8 of Caledonia he carried on a business as carpenter and builder.
He was one of the first men to volunteer for service in the Army during the Civil War. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. C, 30th Wisconsin, Regiment as a private on August 15.He was appointed first lieutenant and later to Captain of Co. C. where he served until the end of the war.
When he mustered out of the service he returned to Calendonia and was a farmer.
In 1898 they retired to Galesville.
They were the parents of three children;
Elmer Ellsworth born July 8,1861, married Jennie Dunlap.
