Lena was the first child of the Laughrey family. They moved from southern Oklahoma to a farm near South Haven, Kansas, where most of the siblings were raised. She attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, where she earned her teaching degree. During World War II, she worked at the Boeing aircraft plant in Wichita, Kansas, as a "Rosie the Riveter", building the B-29 Superfortress bomber. After the war, she returned to being a homemaker, raising her two children. She and her first husband divorced in 1950.
She later learned the floral business, working with her second husband in a greenhouse and floral business for many years until retirement, and remained in Wichita Kansas, after her husbands death, until moving to Derby, Ks.
