John Long gave the land to the city of Auburn for the Sheridan Cemetery. The book, "A History of Nemaha County" tells about his giving the land for the cememtery & also the family cemetery that included the grave of John & Rachel's young daughter, Loda, who died of sunstroke in 1858. John Long is said to have built the first cabin in NE near Brownsville. Long's Creek was named for John & Rachel. John & his family left MD by 1836 & lived in Illinois until 1852 when they moved to Missouri. In 1856 they moved to Nemaha Co., NE.

John Long Sr. died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M.S. Parker, in Auburn, Nemaha, Nebraska, March 28. Mr. Long was 89 years, 7 months & 28 days old at the time of his death.
He has large land holdings in Kansas & Nebraska, 360 acres of which lie south of Centralia. He has many Centralia friends who will regret to hear of his death.
