Gardner Slips On Icy Street And Crushes Temple on Implement Head

Brookhaven's icy streets, cause of several minor accidents during the past few days, brought the first fatality yesterday afternoon when Vick Bertali, local gardener, was killed when he slipped and fell on his axe.

The blunt end of the axe crushed his right temple bringing about his death within a few minutes. An ambulance was summoned to take him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The accident occurred at about 2:30 o'clock near the old Wand home near the Illinois Central railroad south of the overhead bridge.

A small child witnessed the accident and called aid to take the injured man to the hospital.

Mr. Bertali was about 55 years old. He is survived by his wife and three daughters, Mrs. Frances Mullins and Ester and Marie Bertali.

An Italian by birth, Mr. Bertali has lived in Brookhaven for a quarter of a century. He has been noted for his fine truck garden and small orchard near his home on Highway 51 just opposite the Coffee Pot. About town "Vick" has worked at special gardening and other planting.

A requiem mass will be held tomorrow morning at 9:30 o'clock from the St. Francis Catholic church with the Rev. Father MacHalle officiating. Mr. Bertali was a devout Catholic.

Services Held For Vittori Bertoli, Accident Victim

Brookhaven Gardener Laid To Rest In The Catholic Cemetery
Wednesday

Funeral services for Vittori Bertoli,57-year-old Brookhaven gardener, were held Wednesday morning from the St. Francis Catholic Church with burial in the Catholic Cemetery. The Rev. M. A. MacHale officiated.

The victim of a freak accident Monday afternoon, Mr. Bertoli leaves his wife, the former, Miss Faustina Laurini whom he arrived in Busseto, Italy, in 1906. He is also survived by three daughters, Mrs. Frances Mullins and Misses Ester and Marie Bertoli and a sister, Angela, of Italy.

The accident occurred as Mr. Bertoli, a gardener, was carrying a log on one shoulder and an axe on the other in a fall on the ice-covered street near the old canning factory. His head struck against the blunt end of the axe and he was apparently instantly killed.

Injuries were a crushed skull and a broken neck, the log evidently adding its weight to the fall.

Mr. Bertoli was noted for his gardening skill and his fine garden which he had lived at his home south of Brookhaven on Highway 51 opposite the Coffee Pot.

He came to this country from Italy 32 years ago after being reared in Italy. He had served in the Italian guards prior to his immigration.

Pall bearers at the funeral Wednesday were Charles Feduccia, Vincent Fiduccia, Sam Dantoni, Jr., Emile Tuminello, Johnny Poterio and Philip F. Panzica.

Woolworth's store on Cherokee Street was closed Wednesday morning during the funeral since two of Mr. Bertoli's daughters were employed there.

October 25 2007

My maternal grandparents, Vitorrio & Faustina Bertoli arrived aboard the Princess Irene and began the immigration process at 2:20 P.M. They had spent 15 days at sea and came ashore with $20 in thier pockets ($437 today). The Bertoli family traveled to New Orleans, then came to Brookhaven and eventually settled in the old home place on South 1st Street. This home was financed by Ms. Rosalie Serios' father at a cost of $2,700 in 1927 ($29,780.95 today). Today there are 6 nieces and 2 nephews living in the area of Busseto south of Milano, Italy.
