"MRS. GEORGE REITZ DEAD. Expires from Stroke of Paralysis in Gilman Monday
Mrs. George Reitz died Monday at her home in Gilman as the result of a paralytic stroke which she sustained since she came to Gilman to live about Mar 1. Her funeral will be held from the Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon, Rev. C. Wilson officiating, assisted by Rev. J. Haussman.
Mrs. Reitz was born in Germany Oct. 20, 1840. She came to America at an early age, and in 1866 she married George Rietz. To this union were born two sons, George and Augustus, and one daughter, Josie. She had a large circle of friends in and around Gilman."

Marriage record spelled her first name "Johanna". Her name most likely was spelled "Johana". This was the spelling of her mother's name and also of her daughter's. Throughout her life she was known as "Bertha".
Birthdate is not confirmed. Marker on grave is engraved "Oct. 20, 1939; obituary states "Oct. 20, 1840".
