John Buchanan, Jr. was the third of eight known children born to Hannah Campbell and John Buchanan, Sr. John's father came from Ireland, and the 1840 census lists John, Sr. and his mother, Hannah, living in the Lackawannock area of Mercer County, PA where the remainder of their children were born.

John, Jr. married Mary Agnes Jennings on May 12, 1832 in Mercer County, and all of their 10 known children, Seth Harrison, Mary, James, Minerva, John III, Emaline, Hannah, Rachael, Wirt Fruit and Ephraim, were born in the Mercer County area.

The 1880 census shows John's occupation as a laborer.

NOTE: His son James was a Civil War veteran serving two terms, and his son John III died in the Civil War of Typhoid fever, and is buried in Arlington Cemetery.
