Alf was born September 9, 1919 in Korssund, Norway, to Berentina Cecilia (Halstad) and William Johnson. When he was nine months old, Alf came with his parents and three older siblings to the United States and settled in the Hope, ND area. He was confirmed at Perry Lutheran Church and continued to work with his parents on the family farm. In 1946, the family moved to a farm west of Galesburg.
In October of 1951, Alf married Marlys Olstad. They continued to work the family farm, milking cows, raising grain, hogs, cattle, and also raising five children. Alf drove school bus, Standard Oil truck and worked at the Case garage and Mobil station. He served on the Galesburg Elevator board and Elm River Church council. Alf enjoyed throwing horseshoes and spending time with his grandchildren. His declining eye sight kept him from doing the things he loved; reading cards and letters, especially The Green Sheet, playing cards and games with friends and family.
Alf is survived by his wife, Marlys, of Galesburg; five children, Shirley (Allan) Ray of Tilton, NH, Patty (Andy Varriano) Johnson of Tilton, NH, Randy (Melody) Johnson, Michael (Bonnie) Johnson and Mark (Colleen) Johnson all of Galesburg, ND; 9 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 3 step great grandchildren. Alf is also survived by 3 sisters, Violet (Walter) Rindy of Mayville, Doris Karlstad of Lisbon and Hilma Hammer of Washington and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.
Memorials will be given in his name to continue his constant search to cure Macular Degeneration.
