Her year of birth is 1922, according to social security paperwork that she personally filled out (I have obtained a copy).

Hazel used the maiden name McMillan all of her life (except on her first marriage record to Arthur Hurley and on the 1930 census record, where her last name is listed as Kolb on both records; which is the same name of her step during that time frame). SHE IS NOT of McMillan blood. She listed Calvin McMillan as her father on her SS records, but indicated her birth year as 1922. Hazel's mother didn't marry Calvin McMillan until 1923. Through Ancestry and documents uploaded by his descendants, it is noted that Calvin didn't move to Smith County until 1922. Hazel's mother would have become pregnant with her by at least July of 1921. I have spoken with family members who have said that there was knowledge that Calvin was not her biological father and they thought that her mother was in pregnant when she married Calvin, which would make her birth year in 1923. Unfortunately, there are no records that would confirm her birth year to be 1922 or 1923 as I have researched extensively.

Through the Ancestry DNA test, it has been determined without a doubt that her paternal parentage is from a Blalock male and most likely Herbert Blalock, b. 1905 and d. 1970, son of John Preston Blalock Abbie Skipper. The Blalock's were in the same area at the time Hazel's mother would have become pregnant with her (either year of 1921 or 1922) and Herbert's name appears on the same page as Calvin McMillan on the 1940 census (after he had remarried to Leona Cryer). Through the Ancestry DNA test, there are a half a dozen close matches in the 1st-2nd cousin range who are descendants of two of Herbert's daughters Ruby and Abbie and then there are MANY matches to other ancestry members who descend from the Blalock line and the Skipper line (Herbert's parents) and beyond. The matches to descendants from the Skipper line (Herbert's mother is Abbie Skipper) 100% confirm that Hazel's biological father is a descendant of John Preston Blalock and Abbie Skipper. There is a very small chance Hazel's father could have been Herbert's brother Alton, but with Alton being a couple of years younger than Sara Elizabeth Billie O'Conner (Hazel's mother) I felt he was not as likely as Herbert was. Alton would have been 14 in 1921 (if Hazel was conceived in this year) and 15 in 1922, whereas Herbert would have been 15 in July 1921 and her mother would have been 17 in July of 1921. If in the future I find anything indicating her correct year of birth or ANY type of documentation regarding Herbert or Alton being her biological father I will update the memorial.

I have researched extensively to find a birth record for Hazel with no luck. Unfortunately, there may not be a birth record as they lived in rural Smith county at the time of her birth and she likely birthed at home and family has confirmed that they didn't think she was born in a hospital.

There was a 4th marriage to Jack Barrow in 1962. They separated around 1965, and a petition for divorce was filed by Jack in 1967, but it was never finalized. The court document filed in Dallas County indicates it was dismissed for "want of prosecution". I have not found if they ever were divorced, but I suspect she filed for divorce in California. I am still researching this and trying to find the divorce decree. Other than that, we know very little about him other than his name and that there were no children from this marriage. I have confirmed through process of elimination that the Jack listed as a spouse her in the memorial is the correct Jack Barrow from Dallas.

Hazel is my grandmother and I am well acquainted with her life story. My father and her oldest son, as well as me and my two children, have tested through Ancestry confirming no relation to the McMillan line and 100% certainty to the Blalock line.
