Son of Jacob Rhodes/Rhoads, Sr., and Sarah Withers/Weathers of North Carolina.

Husband of Ann Spencer of Spencer's Mountain, North Carolina.

Veteran of the Civil War having served as a prison guard with the 4th North Carolina Reserve. When he returned home from the war, his family saw him coming across a field towards home and they ran out to meet him. After he hugged and kissed all who met him, he refused to enter the house until he had gone to the nearby creek to bathe. His wife Ann brought him clean clothes and once he was cleaned and dressed he said to her, "Now, there is someone I have not seen yet". He was referring to his daughter, my great grandmother Christiana, as she had been born while he was away. He went to her and picked her up for the first time and only then did he enter into his home.

I recently recovered his old Kentucky rifle from a family member who found it in a rusty and pitted condition in another family members barn where it had sat for nearly 75 years.
