Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Little Flower Catholic Church, for Joe Kremer, 92, of Rugby, who died Wednesday, Dec. 30 at the Heart of America Medical Center Long Term Care.

Burial will be in the spring at the church cemetery.

Joe was born Dec. 23, 1917, at home in rural Karlsruhe, a son of Stephan and Elizabeth (Wentz) Kremer. He was raised there and received his education in a country school near his home. He worked on the family farm and for area farmers, hired out on the threshing crews, and worked in the Civilian Conservation Camps in North Dakota during the Depression. He married Helen Scherr on Oct. 17, 1939, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Balta. Following their marriage, the couple farmed a short time in the Karlsruhe area before returning to the Orrin-Balta area to take over operation of the Scherr family farm. They retired to Rugby in 1976. Helen died Oct. 12, 2007.

He was a former member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, a current member of Little Flower Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by two sons: Howard, Fargo, and Ronald, Orrin; five daughters: Janice Pfeifer and Bernadette Senger, both of Rugby, Dorothy Aberle, Surrey, Lillian Bachmeier, Havre, Mont., and Marlys Bohrer, Fargo; 32 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Philip, Rugby; two sisters: Ann Degenstein, Salem, S.D., and Julia Lenertz, West St. Paul, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Julia Kremer, Rugby; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Joseph, at age 16; a great-grandson, James McKinney; a sister, Christine Volk; five brothers: Anton, Jack, George, Fred, and Peter; and his parents.

Fr. Tom Graner, Fr. Joseph Senger, and Deacon Rev. Arlen Blessum officiated. Music was provided by the Little Flower Church Choir.

Casketbearers were Eric Kremer, Edwin Pfeifer, Wayne Aberle, Scott Senger, Kenneth Bachmeier, Dustin Kremer, and Luke Bohrer.
