He was the son of General A.A. Chapman from Union and was attending Washington College in Lexington, Va. when the war began. As a Lt.he spent a short period of time in Lowry's Battery early in the war. By April 1862 he had orginized his own battery with 150 volunteers from Monroe, Greenbrier, and Alleghany counties and served briefly with Gen. Heth's anrmy in southwest Va. and was present at tne Battle of Lewisburg in May of 1862. His battery served honorably through out the war with the 1st Brigade Army of the Southwest commanded mostly by Col George S. Patton. They saw extreamly hard service at Dry Creek in August 1863, at New Market, in May of 1864 and with Lee at the end of the Wilderness Campaign. He and the battery served with Gen. Early in the Valley Campaign which took them to the outskirts of Washington, DC. He was with Early when he was mortally wounded at Winchester, Va. on Sept. 19, 1864. He died at the University of Virginia of tetanus on Sept. 28, 1864. He was a gallant leader, loved and respected by those who served under him and by those he served.
