On June 30, 1863 he enlisted with Myer's Independent Company of Pennsylvania Cavalry for emergency service during the Gettysburg Campaign. He mustered out on July 31, 1863.

His Parents were James , born in 1781 and Sarah, born in 1800, both in Pennsylvania.
Joshua was listed as being born in 1838 or 1841. According to the 97th Pa. History, he could have been born in 1839 or 1840 in order to have been 21 in August 1861. His Parents, especially his Father, were older than normal when he was born and they may have increased his age for the 1850 censures just for looks. At any Rate, Joshua lived an unusual life.
