Peter (Ballenden) Ballendine (1836 - 1885)

Peter Ballendine, a son of John Ballenden and Mary Humphreville, of the Hudson's Bay Company, born at Cumberland House on 10 December 1836, and educated at St. John's School at Red River, Manitoba.
In 1863 He married Caroline Rowland, Daughter of William Rowland and Betsy Ballendine, at Fort Carlton, where his father-in-law was HBC Factor.
Entering the Hudson's Bay Company service in 1859, he worked as a clerk, postmaster and interpreter at Cumberland House, Fort Carlton, and Fort Pitt Later in the 1870's he was in charge of the Battleford post, retiring from the Hudson Bay Co. in 1876; eventually, he became a free trader in the Battleford area.
In 1875, as part of a Hudson's Bay Company hunting party of First Nations and Métis people, Ballendine was accosted by Gabriel Dumont and a group St. Laurence Métis for hunting in advance of the main hunt. When Ballendine's party refused to abide by Dumont's rules, forty of Dumont's men seized their carts and horses, provisions and game.
He was the interpreter for Treaty No 6. at Fort Carlton, in 1876; and, also when Chief Mosquito signed at Battleford in 1878, He served as a member of the Battleford Home Guards in the Rebelion, and as a scout for Otter at the Battle of Cut Knife Hill. In Battleford, he was considered one of the leading men in the community, he died there 12, December 1885. Peter's brother, Adam, was also in the Battleford Home Guards as was his cousin, Sam Ballendine. His adopted son, Fredrick, was a member of Poundmaker's Band at the Battle of Cut Knife Hill.

Death of an old Resident.
On the evening of Saturday, the 12th, Peter Ballendine, of this place, died. He had been ill off and on for some time, but his death was rather unexpected. He was a son of John Ballendine, and was born at Cumberland, on the Saskatchewan, in 1832, thus making him 53 years of age. He was educated at St. John's College, Manitoba and entered the service of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1859, and continued until 1876, when he went into business for himself here, carrying on a general trading establishment for some years. For some time previous to his death he was in the service of the Indian Department. He leaves a widow and one son to mourn his loss, who have the deepest sympathy of the public in their in their bereavement, as Mr. Ballendine was a universal favorite.
