In December of 1812, Mrs. Sarah RILEY, a widow with at least one very small child, was married, by Rev. Henry KOLLOCK, Pastor of the Independent Presbyterian Church, to Capt. Walker C. SAWYER (born about 1789 in New Hampshire), who died at sea in 1819.
In 1845 in Savannah (in the 2nd District of Chatham County), Sarah SAWYER's household consisted of one male, four females and three slaves, living next to her son-in-law's household of five.
In 1850 and 1860 in Savannah, Mrs. Sarah SAWYER lived with her widowed daughter,
• Charlotte S. SAWYER BRANCH (born 1814, died 1894, widow of John Henry Salah BRANCH, who had died in 1848) and with her three grandsons:
• Lt. John Lufburrow BRANCH (1838-1861),
• Sanford Walker BRANCH (1840-1891), and
• Hamilton McDevit BRANCH (1843-1899).
In 1860, Sarah and her daughter were milliners and dressmakers. The war years took Sarah to Screven County, where she died.
Note: She was likely staying with the Lufburrow Family of Savannah and Oliver.
Abstract from Laurel Grove Cemetery Keepers Book: Sarah SAWYER died the 7th of October, 1862, and was buried on the 9th in lot 298. She was a native of Savannah [sic], aged 78 years and a resident of Screven County.
